Collectionner l'impressionnisme

Although they are not exempt from economic and social concerns, collectors of Impressionism have often been involved in the defense of this movement that they have contributed, according to their time, to emerge, to impose or to disseminate. It is to this committed category of collectors that this book proposes to be interested. From the constitution of the collection to its entry into the museum, from the support of artists on a territorial scale to the international dissemination of the movement, from the first intimate hangings to the questions posed by their presentation in museums, collectors played an essential role in the development and dissemination of Impressionism from the beginning of the movement to the middle of the twentieth century. The challenge, through the sixteen contributions of international specialists, is to re-examine and reassess the importance of these actors in relation to their time, their political, social and economic context. Whether Depeaux, de Nittis, the Palmers, Ohara, Bürhle, Caillebotte or Fayet be studied from a monographic point of view or more global, it is the multiplication of these profiles and these collectors' trajectories that allow readers to better understand their weight in the history of the movement.
